Lu’an City, commonly known as “Wanxi (West Anhui), is located in the west of Anhui Province, at the northern foot of Ta-pieh Mountains, and at the junction of Hubei, Henan and Anhui provinces”. Long history and a galaxy of talents

More than 4,000 years ago, King Shun dispatched Gao Yao in a place called Lu. Lu’an was the fief of Gao Yao，one of the four ancient saints, and his descendants, also known as “Gaocheng ‒ the town of Gao Yao”. In 121 BC, Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty assigned the meaning of “peace in six places” to Lu’an State, and the name of “Lu’an” is still in use today. Since ancient time, the place has given birth to many historical and cultural celebrities, such as Liu Qing, King of Qinghe in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhou Yu, a famous general of the Wu State during the Three Kingdoms Period, Li Gonglin, a famous painter in the Song Dynasty, Yu brothers, noted veterinarians in the Ming Dynasty, Xu Jishen, a proletarian strategist, and Jiang Guangci, a left-wing writer.

Lu’an has made great sacrifices and important contributions to the victory of the Chinese revolution and socialist construction. It is the core area of Hubei-Henan-Anhui revolutionary base area. In 28years, the red flag did not fall, and 300,000 martyrs died. Twelve main Red Army teams, such as the Red 25th Army, were born, and 108 founding generals, such as Hong Xuezhi and Pi Dingjun, emerged, leaving behind the Ta-pieh Mountains spirit of “firmness and loyalty, sacrifice and dedication, serving the people wholeheartedly and always following the CPC”.

In response to Chairman Mao, “We must repair the Huaihe River!” With resettlement of more than 400,000 inhabitants and 300,000 mu of cultivated land flooded, it took14 years to build the Pi-Shi-Hang Irrigation Area, which bred the Pi-Shi-hang spirit of “self-reliance, tenacious struggle, sacrifice and dedication, scientific and realistic practice”.

Lu’an is home to more than 240 mountains above 1000 meters above sea level, accounting for 3/4 of the Dabie Mountain area. The forest coverage rate is 45.51%, and more than 70% in mountainous areas. The afforestation rate is 51.27%, the wetland area is 83,600 hectares, and the nature reserve area is 64,400 hectares. Tiantanghai, the only primeval forest in East China, has a content density of negative oxygen ions of 45,000-135,000/cm³, and it is a natural air anion bar. Baimajian, the main peak of the Ta-pieh Mountains, has vast ancient trees, clear springs and rapids, and the original ecology is well preserved. Nine major rivers, such as Pi River, Shi River and Hangbu River, and six reservoirs, namely Foziling, Meishan, Longhekou, Xianghongdian, Mozitan and Bailianya, have accumulated 7 billion cubic meters of high-quality water sources above Class II. Pi-Shi-Hang Irrigation Area, one of the seven artificial irrigation areas in the world, irrigates 11 million mu of fertile land in the lower reaches.

Unique resource endowment

Lu’an is an important commodity grain and oil production base in China, and it is home to more than 110 kinds of famous, special and excellent agricultural and sideline products. There are 1,866 kinds of Chinese herbal medicines with a total reserve of more than 200 million kilograms, occupying 7 seats among “top ten Anhui medicines”, ranking first in the province.
